Through This Lens is proud to invite you to a hands-on portraiture workshop where award-winning photographer Christer Berg will share his portrait lighting and photography techniques. He will also discuss equipment options and their pros and cons, how to build rapport and work with subjects young and older to best portray their individual qualities in portraiture, and more.

Date

Sunday, April 3 from 9am to 5pm, with one hour lunch break.

Who is the Workshop For?

The workshop is geared towards both photographers who are curious about portrait photography and would like to explore what in entails and to those who would like to take their portrait photography and lighting skills to a new level.

This workshop is limited to only 12 participants, to help ensure an intimate experience with plenty of hands-on, actual shooting by the participants using models.

Our goal is to provide you witha solid understanding of studio lighting equipment and techniques and to get you energized and inspired about portrait photography!

Topics that will be covered during the workshop include:

  • Different objectives with portrait photography – telling your story vs. telling the subject’s story

  • How to build rapport and the aspects of making “truthful” vs. interpretive portraits

Lighting options and their pros and cons – strobes vs. shoe mount flash vs. ambient light

  • Light modifier options and their effect on the subject – softboxes, umbrellas, beautydishes, cans, and options such as grids

  • Different lighting techniques – contemporary, old Hollywood, recreating ambient and window light

  • Plus, plenty of shooting using your own camera with different light setups and models!

What to Bring

An open, excited mind and a DSLR camera with a lens in the 50-105mm range (a zoom lens that covers at least part of this range is fine). A pen and notepad may also come in handy to take notes.
